Hooray! It’s National Payroll Week 2020!
From 7 to 11 September, payroll professionals across the country will come together (virtually) to celebrate National Payroll Week.
What is National Payroll Week?
Established by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) in 1998, National Payroll Week celebrates the payroll profession and all of its dedicated professionals.
The week is designed to raise awareness of the importance and impact of the payroll industry on the UK through the collection of income tax and National Insurance. After all, without them, nobody would be paid!
Payroll is the largest expenditure in the great majority of UK organisations and it is estimated that it will contribute around £325.7bn to the UK economy this year.
Unsurprisingly, this year has been more difficult and testing than ever before, but payroll professionals did what they do best to ensure employees across the country were still paid despite the circumstances surrounding COVID-19.
With all new measures being put in place such as the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Small Business Grant Fund, payroll professionals have demonstrated their impressive skills, dedication and flexibility during a pandemic and financial crisis.

How is it Being Celebrated?
Many payroll offices around the country will host their own mini-celebrations, but CIPP has an itinerary of their own that you can participate in:
Monday 7 September
CIPP Future of Payroll Roundtable
- Virtual roundtable hosted by CIPP in conjunction with The Payroll Centre and Reward Strategy
CIPP National Payroll Week Launch Event- Virtual Wine Tasting
- Available to invited attendees
Thursday 10 September
CIPPs National Payroll Week Conference
- Virtual conference available to all payroll professionals
Other ways to celebrate your payroll staff include:
- Give a gift: You don’t have to make a grand gesture, a box of chocolates is simple enough to show your appreciation.
- Host a virtual coffee morning: Taking an hour off work to reflect and celebrate all the hard work done this year over coffee is a great way to acknowledge all of their achievements.
- Give a bonus: Whilst payroll staff are the ones who process the bonuses given to other employees, they rarely receive bonuses themselves. Rewarding them with a bonus shows that all their extra hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.
